Many geeks find the installation of debian a bit hard so I thought to share this simple installation guide with you guys. First download the iso image from the official website. Once the download is finished follow each step of this guide in order to get a successful installation on your computer.

You can either make a bootable usb stick or burn the iso to a cd. Because I am going to test the installation in a virtualbox I don't have to do such things.

Top Things To Do After Installing Debian

Install sudo

sudo is not installed by default on debian systems the way it is on Ubuntu. The apt-get command can be used to install sudo on our debian system.

First run the following command to become the root user.

su root

Then install sudo like shown below.

apt-get install sudo

Once the installation is finished you need to add the user in the sudoers file in order to grant the right to run commands with sudo.

Add user to the sudo group.

adduser oltjano sudo

Then grant sudo permissions to your username. The following commands will do that for you.

visudo

Add the following line to the end of the file.

oltjano ALL = (ALL) ALL

Make sure to replace oltjano with your username. Then save the file and you are good to go.

Install Google Chrome

Debian 8.0 Jessie comes with Iceweasel web browser which is really fast and lightweight but I prefer Google Chrome for a better web browsing experience.

First go and download Google Chrome package for debian in the official page. Just google it and the results will come up.

Once the .deb package is downloaded use the following command to install it.

sudo dpkg -i google-chrome*

In case you run on dependency errors just run the following command. I am very sure it will fix the errors and install Google Chrome for you.

sudo apt-get install -f

Install vlc Media Player

I want to watch some movies on my debian machine. Also play some music. I prefer to use vlc media player for that. So open a new terminal and run the following command to install vlc on your debian system.

sudo apt-get install vlc

Install shotwell

shotwell is a great application I use on Ubuntu to import digital images from my camera. It can be insalled on debian too.

Use the following command to install shotwell on debian 8.0 jessie.

sudo apt-get install shotwell

Conclusion
