Install Krita - An Opensource Graphics Program in Ubuntu 14.04

Krita is open source software for concept artists, digital painters and illustrators. You can create paintings, drawings, sketches and almost all other forms of artwork with Krita. It’s a raster graphics editor, which means it allows users to create and edit images interactively on the computer. These generated images then can be saved into various raster formats. Raster formats include JPEG, PNG, GIF and TIFF. Key features of Krita are listed below, kindly note that this is just a short summary of its prominent features, Krita is really a gigantic software application and it features list is quite lengthy:

  • Uses OpenGL for high-bit-depth monitor support.
  • Allows creations of deeply nested and grouped layer images
  • Provides supports for many file formats and color models
  • Provides Graphical Filters with Preview features
  • Provides Multiple Brush Engines and Graphical Tablets support.
  • Provides Wrap around mode canvas mode for tiled textures
  • Supports Clone, Vector, and dynamic filter-effects

Krita 2.9 has been released; its out now and already got attention of users. We will be listing its exciting features later in the post,  but first let’s see how we can install Krita 2.9 release on Ubuntu 14.04.

Krita Installation

First of all, we'll need to add ppa repository to our Ubuntu System. Open your terminal and run the following command to add repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

Once PPA has been added, we need to update local repository to index it. Run following command on the terminal and it will take care of updating repository information.

sudo apt-get update

Now, we are ready to install the Krita 2.9 release, run followings on your terminal to install it.

sudo apt-get install krita

sudo apt-get install kritasketch


That’s all; Krita 2.9 release has been installed on your Ubuntu now. You should be able to see it under "Applications" now.

Here is a brief outline of the amazing Krita 2.9 features.

  • open more than one image in a single window
  • increased amount of brushes available
  • Select more than one layer at a time and delete, move or drag and drop them
  • Multiple options added for cursors.
  • Thumbnails for resources are resizeable now.
  • Gradients editing has been improved.
  • A new mask type "non-destructive transformation masks" has been added.
  • Rendering of vector graphics on various resolution settings has been improved.
  • One layer can be split into multiple now.
  • Flow and Opacity options have been separated now.
  • Brush preset system has been improved.

  • The G’Mic plugin has been updated.
  • A posterize filter has been added.

Krita, well known as a KDE program, its not only limited to the Plasma Desktop. Krita run fine on Windows, Gnome, XFCE, and OSX as well. Another good thing is that , the package is available for Debian, OpenSUSE , Fedora , Gentoo , Chakra , Arch and FreeBSD. Install Krita 2.9 and enjoy its exciting features!
